I biked as a kid in WV to get "away" - for the freedom, solitude and self reliance. I met my wife in 1994 and moved to Iowa, started our family and lost my biking connection. My weight tipped the scales at 450lbs and I wasn't well. In 2005 I had a massive "widowmaker " heart attack and needed a heart transplant or I would not survive. I got my heart in August of 2008 and a second chance at life. I spent a lot of time on a stationary bike during rehab and got back into biking. Anything is possible on a bike. But the best part is the relationships built on 2 wheels.

I was your average guy who enjoyed a good cocktail and some comfort food. While this was fun, I found myself longing for more. I’d always enjoyed biking so I figured, why not do more of something I love? About a year ago I got into gravel riding and it took off from there. It’s set off a drive within me to seek out all sorts of awesome adventures like heading to Nepal to hike Mt. Everest next month. I look forward to sharing with you how bicycling has changed my life in such an unimaginably cool way.

I was a really fat guy that didn’t want to be fat anymore. I Started riding to get in better shape and hated running with every ounce of my being, 4,720 ounces actually. My riding progressed from local trail rides, to riding gravel to riding lots of gravel, to racing to racing 200 mile races. I still love all kinds of riding because it is awesome and the people are great.

I have been into cycling my whole life. It's my lifestyle. Riding, racing, teaching and inspiring kigs. Now with my kids getting older and me closer to retirement, I want to give back, so I started the Ankeny Bike Club to get more youth and families riding bikes. I want to get more school kids riding bikes to promote a healthy lifestyle and gain independence.

In 2014, I was looking for a spin class and found Pedal Off the Pounds, a program offered by the Des Moines Cycle club. That was my introduction to cycling. I have continued to coach/lead Pedal Off the Pounds since. I love watching how cycling transforms so many - myself included. Last year my big adventures were a week-long dog-sledding adventure and I rode the Greater Yellowstone Coalition ride in Wyoming.

Talk begins at 6:15pm. Come grab a beer or two and settle in for a night of learning and Adventure Biking! Come early for Happy Hour from 4-6pm and snag $1 off house pints before the session. Free to attend, all ages welcome.
