Mason City, IA By LAURA ANDREWS The weather has turned cold in North Iowa and one group of avid cyclists has turned to the indoors until spring. “We love outdoor cycling,” said Steve Schurtz, organizer of North Iowa Spin, which started Tuesday evening. “No one wants to give it up in the winter but we can’t ride outside.” The indoor cycling club, offered through the North Iowa Touring Club, is in its sixth year and includes 51 sessions. All of the participants bring their own bicycles and trainers, which makes the bicycles stationary. Trainers also may be rented. The workout involves a leader and drills, but people can go at their own skill level. Many of the members are there to stay in shape while others just like to ride their bicycles. “A group setting is a more enjoyable indoor cycling experience than by yourself,” said participant Todd Juhlin, Mason City. The class is open to anyone but participants must join the North Iowa Touring Club, Schurtz said. “It’s a great group of people,” said participant Sandy Madden, Northwood. North Iowa Spin meets from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturdays at 1604 S. Pierce Ave. — formerly Wellborn Industries. The cost is $100 for a full season pass, but other options are available.
