MUSCATINE, Iowa— In light of a fatal accident involving a bicycle and motor vehicle last Saturday, motorists and bicyclists are urged to be cautious.

"If there are bikes on the road, get over and let them share the road," said Muscatine Police Chief Brett Talkington.

Lisa Kuhn, 40, of Muscatine was riding in the third annual “pEDaling for Pancreatic Cancer” bicycle fundraiser when she was struck and killed.

Talkington said in light of the tragedy, motorists and bicyclists alike need to be cautious.

"Be aware of your surroundings," he said.

According to the Iowa Bicycling Coalition, five bicycle fatalities have occurred in Iowa in 2016.

Mark Wyatt, Executive Director of the Iowa Bicycling Coalition, said that motorists should be aware at all times of the year.

"Bicycle season is year-round. Motorists should drive with the expectation that they can encounter a cyclist at any time," Wyatt said.

He said motorists can follow steps to help ensure the safety of bicyclists on the road.
