Two city staff members walked Jefferson Street Wednesday with a tape measure, a can of spray paint and a bicycle rack.

The pair, Public Works Director Nick MacGregor and Community Development Director Eric Tysland, sought to mark spots where bicycle racks will soon be installed. Downtown Burlington is getting about 30 of 100 bike racks coming to Des Moines County. The racks were bought through a Wellmark Foundation grant that Great River Health System staff won.

The racks are going to be installed over the next couple of weeks, MacGregor said, with a goal in mind of finishing before the Snake Alley Criterium on May 26. The racks are primarily being installed along Jefferson Street.

Visitors to Thursday’s farmer’s market may notice three-inch white stripes on sidewalks near street corners. Those are future locations of the racks.

Tysland and MacGregor sought spots that don’t interfere with regular foot traffic and don’t restrict handicapped accessibility.

The racks will be bolted into the ground. No concrete is needed for installation.
