Business is anything but usual.

In Iowa and across the nation, the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the retail landscape. Even stores that are surviving or thriving through the pandemic have had to adapt. That includes new or increased measures such as curbside pickup, deliveryand an emphasis on social media and online sales.

Despite the pandemic being good for business, overall, Bike World owner Bif Ridgway's stores are among those that have had to make some adjustments. His West Des Moines, Urbandale and Ames locations have been limiting foot traffic in the storesand probably will continue to do so for a while, he said.

Though Bike World never closed because of the pandemic, more people wereorderingtheir bikes online. Where curbside service and delivery were once rare cases, they're now popular choices for customers.

"It's a reinventing of the wheel for how we do business," he said.

Those options helped Bike World's sales go up 50% for online sales during the month of April and depleted the business's inventory. Ridgway said Bike World has just 40% of the bike inventory it usually has in the spring because customers arelooking for a safe and healthy outside activity.
