With 68 miles of trail in Des Moines and an estimated 4 million annual trail trips, city officials say they're constantly working to keep up with community members' craving for outdoor recreation opportunities.
The city plans to add 12 miles to the system by 2030, said Parks and Recreation Director Ben Page.
Page said the city in recent years has gained access to data showing gaps in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Now it's one of the top priorities when Des Moines scouts locations for new trails and parks, he said, though not all of its disadvantaged areas are in line to house a new trail segment.
